When Did We Stop Being ‘Citizens’ And Become ‘Consumers’?

I was thinking about this today after a discussion of some very green conscious colleagues, wondering what it means to be classified as a USA "consumer" instead of, like in my early years, as a USA "citizen" first and foremost.

Being a consumer in today's world comes with so much responsibility, in large part, due to the negative impact over consumption has on our rapidly depleting natural resources. I get the history of how this consumer vs. citizen focus came about, but in today's world, we can choose for ourselves who we are by where we spend our time and focus.

I personally choose to be a citizen first. And as I make consumer decisions, make them consciously, based on choices that are better for planet earth. Each of us can do this and regenerate our planet, one conscious choice at a time.
